Rugby Conversion Kicks and the Application of Right-Angled Trigonometry
From the sporting context of a rugby player attempting a conversion kick comes an application of right-angled trigonometry. The question “where to kick from?” leads to the consideration of how an angle of view changes as distances change and ultimately leads to a search for the optimal kicking position.
This Video for Learning collection includes a video introduction that sets the “where to kick from” question in the rugby context, and provides a possible starting point. It is accompanied by curriculum context information and, for those wishing to use this as a rich and accessible assessment task, a task sheet including ways to individualise student responses.
The accompanying “teacher only” collection (available to Prime School Plus members only to prevent student access) also includes a second video that works through an approach to the problem posed, a handy teacher resource or support for students needing more scaffolding. Also included are additional teacher notes and a spreadsheet that has all the answers!
