Doing this I was guilty of teacher lust, I demonstrated too much, rather than allowing the students to work it out. I wanted the students to concentrate on seeing Pythagoras and not to get too bogged down in the algebra and so NumSolve is an effective tool to support that development. the equation, A lesson and a half later I think everyone is comfortably solving problems and getting better at presenting their solution in terms of a diagram, the equation and then the answer with units and rounding.
This approach has meant we haven’t done a set of exercises finding the hypotenuse and then another set to find a shorter side, rather the problems are mixed from the start.
Trying to save as an eActivity was only picked up by a couple of keen students, I certainly wouldn’t show this to the class again, just allow them to look at the Learning notes.
Overall the activity has worked really well.
